Hydrolytic anaerobic reactor as low cost pre-treatment for wastewater treatment followed by constructed wetlands

Even though the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC demands an adequate wastewater treatment, there are still many small and medium size towns across Europe discharging raw wastewater to nature. Additionally, many of the towns cannot deal with the investment needed for building, the operation and the maintenance costs of a conventional treatment plant making unsustainable and uneconomic (EC, 2013). The HIGHWET project was addressed to improve the wastewater (WW) treatment of small populations, food and beverage (F&B) factories and livestock farms since it is an important problem due to its decentralized location, limited economic resources, and lack of specialized personnel.
